Chief ministers appointed in all seven provinces as ruling parties finalize power-sharing deal

KATHMANDU, Jan 12: Chief ministers have been appointed in all seven provinces as per the power-sharing deal reached among the ruling CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and Janamat Party.

The appointment of new chief ministers following the November 20 provincial election was completed with the appointment of new chief ministers in Madhesh, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces on Wednesday. Chief ministers of Province 1, Bagmati Province and Lumbini Province were appointed earlier.

JSP’s Saroj Kumar Yadav was appointed as the chief minister of Madhesh Province on Wednesday. While Leela Giri of UML was appointed as the chief minister of Lumbini Province, Raj Kumar Sharma of Maoist Center was picked to the post of chief minister in Karnali Province.

Similarly, Rajendra Rawal of UML was appointed as the chief minister in Sudurpaschim Province on Wednesday. 

Earlier, UML’s Hikmat Kumar Karki was appointed as chief minister of Province 1. Similarly, Maoist Center’s Shalik Ram Jammkattel and UML’s Khaga Raj Adhikari were appointed as chief ministers of Bagmati Province and Gandaki Province, respectively.

According to UML leaders, Chief Minister Karki will head the provincial government for five years in Province 1. But in Madhesh province, there has been an agreement to lead the provincial government for two and half years each by JSP and Janamat Party led by Dr CK Raut.

There has been an agreement between the ruling UML and Maoist Center to head the provincial government in Bagmati Province for two and half years each. While UML will lead the government for five years both in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, Maoist Center will lead the government for five years in Karnali Province.

In Sudurpaschim Province, there has been an agreement between the UML and Maoist Center to head the government for two and half years each as part of the power sharing deal.
