KATHMANDU, Sept 16: Price of chicken in the Kathmandu Valley has increased by Rs 20 to Rs 300 per kg effective from Saturday. The National Chicken Sellers´ Association raised the price, citing surge in demand amid drop in supplies due to bird-flu outbreak in the Valley a few months ago.

Before the bird-flu outbreak, dressed chicken was selling at Rs 280 per kg and farmers were getting Rs 200 per kg for live chicken. With the fresh price hike, farmers will get Rs 230 per kg for live chicken.[break]

“The demand for chicken has increased significantly after bird-flu was brought into control. However, supply is dwindling,” Janga Bahadur BC, president of National Chicken Sellers´ Association, told Republica. He said the market will see shortage of chicken in the coming days as farmers have reduced number of chickens in their farms due to bird-flu outbreak.

Narayan Hari Khatri, president of Nepal Poultry Federation, said poultry entrepreneurs were compelled to raise the price because of rise in demand. “Demand has increased, but supply is not picking up,” he said, adding, “Chicken price might increase further during Dashain if supplies do not improve.”
