A joint meeting of National Poultry Farmers Association (NPFA), Nepal Feed Industries Association (NFIA) and Nepal Chicken Processors Association (NCPA) held in the capital decided to raise the price of chicken by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 270 per kg. [break]
With the fresh price hike, farmers will get Rs 180 per kg and consumers will have to pay Rs 190 per kg for live chicken.
Gokarna Ghimire, president of NPFA, said the price was increased amid sharp decline in chicken production due to sharp drop in chick supplies in poultry farms.
“Supplies of chicks in poultry farms have plunged by over 55 percent over a couple of months. A large numbers of farms are without chicks and some have chicks much lower than their usual requirement,” Ghimire said. He said chicken price could further go up in the coming days if the shortage of chicks persists.
Entrepreneurs also attributed rising cost of production due to soaring price of inputs as another reason behind price hike.
Traders in the Valley said the supply of chicken from Chitwan -- the major supplier -- has also gone down over the last few weeks.
