KATHMANDU, March 20: Visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has asked Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to immediately work towards ending impunity in the country.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Dahal at Baluwatar Friday, Pillay said the government must establish accountability to check the growing culture of impunity. [break]
Protests, Power and the Price of Neglect
On Pillay’s concern, Prime Minister Dahal acknowledged that the government has not been able to work as expected towards protecting and promoting of human rights. “Since we are in a transition, we are facing difficulties in protecting and promoting human rights,” prime minister’s press advisor Om Sharma quoted him as saying during the meeting.
Dahal also assured Pillay that the government will soon form disappearance commission to dispense transitional justice.
During the meeting, the UN rights chief urged the prime minister to extend the term of her office in Nepal for the next three years. The prime minister said he will discuss the issue with other political parties and inform her office later.
The UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has already written a formal letter to the government for the extension of its tenure.
