KATHMANDU, March 23: This year´s SLC exams -- which kicked off in a relatively peaceful environment just four days ago -- turned ugly on Friday, with reports of violent clashes pouring in from several districts.

According to Republica correspondent Kalendra Sejuwal, police fired four rounds in the air to disperse hundreds of locals who pelted stones at security personnel and teachers after being barred from passing chits to students for cheating, at Bajedichaur exam centre in Surkhet.[BREAK]

On Friday, some 1,000 locals surrounded the Bajedichaur exam centre, about 70 km from Birendranagar. "There were just 13 policemen at hand led by an inspector," SP Govinda Ram Pariyar said. "They averted an untoward incident by dispersing the crowd." However, Inspector Yogendra Singh Thapa sustained a minor injury on the chin in clashes with the locals.

Hikmat Rokka, the exam centre chief, said that the locals -- who were expecting to supply the chits to students as freely as last year -- went berserk after being stopped by police. "We foiled the attempts," said Rokka. District Police Office, Surkhet has said that it will deploy more police from Sunday.

According to Mahendranagar-based Republica correspondent Bikram Giri, locals pelted stones at Satyabadi Higher Secondary School exam centre in Bajhang district, injuring seven persons including security personnel and exam guards.

According to police, Dipakram Joshi, president of the school management committee, teacher Hiri Prasad Joshi, Rajendra Prasad Joshi, Lokendra Bahadur Khadka and two policemen were injured in stone-throwing by locals.

According to Siraha-based Republica correspondent Mithilesh Yadav, locals pelted stones at a vehicle used by Area Administration Office Lahan chief Raju Prasad Shah, in Bhaluwahi of Siraha district. Shah had gone there to monitor an exam centre. The locals became angry after Shah took away all chits from them. The locals later took the chits back from Shah.

Meanwhile, two examinees were expelled from the Bastipur Higher Secondary School exam centre after a team led by Assistant Chief District Officer of Siraha Kishor Kumar Chaudhari found them sharing answers. Friday was the day for the math exams.
