Based on comprehensive official statistics, the Millennium Development Goals Report 2013 shows that combined actions of national governments, the international community, civil society and the private sector are turning the pipe dream of achieving MDGs into reality.[break]
“The Millennium Development Goals have been the most successful global anti-poverty push in the history. The MDGs have proven that focused global development objectives can make a profound difference,” the statement quotes Ban as saying.
Achievement of eight goals were agreed by all countries as an outgrowth of the UN Millennium Summit in 2000.
With the improvement in quality of millions of lives through poverty reduction, rise in access to safe water, improvement in lives of slum dwellers and achievement of gender parity in primary schools, the report says remarkable progress in other areas means more MDGs targets can be achieved by 2015.
The report says that mortality rates from malaria fell by more than 25 percent globally and an estimated 1.1 million deaths were averted during 2000 to 2010.
However the report says achievement of the some goals was affected by less aid money, with poorest countries bearing the brunt. Net aid disbursements from developed to developing countries totaled $126 billion for achievement of the goals.
“This represents a 4 percent drop in real terms compared to 2011, which was 2 percent below 2010 levels. The decline affected least developed countries the most,” the report adds.
