KATHMANDU, Feb 21: The meeting of the Constitutional Committee (CC) of the CA on Tuesday did not deliberate on the contentious issues of constitution drafting citing the meeting of the top political party leaders on Thursday.

In the meeting, the coordinator of the dispute resolution subcommittee led by Maoist Chairman Pusha Kamal Dahal briefed the CC about the issues that have been sorted out and the issues that have not been settled. [break]

"We will hold a meeting of top leaders on Thursday and attempt to reach an agreement in a package," Dahal told the media.

He said that the next meeting of the CC will be held on February 27.

The system of governance and state restructuring are the most contentious issues in the new constitution. The UCPN (Maoist) wants a directly elected executive president, the Nepali Congress (NC) wants parliamentary system, while UML is batting for a directly-elected executive prime minister.

According to leaders, UML leader Jhalanath Khanal has stated that the constitution writing process cannot move forward without the Maoist-led government concluding the peace process.

Meanwhile, CC Chair Nilamber Acharya expressed disappointment over the delay in constitution drafting process. "The new constitution will not be drafted by its deadline of May 28 if the political parties continue to work in the present fashion," said Acharya.
