In the recent years, the Nepali fashion scene has been upgrading its standard quite a bit and quite drastically to boot. It’s not just celebrities and fashion bloggers who are conscious about their style and fashion choices but the almost every millennial and generations that come after them too seem to taking a keen interest in it.
An emerging figure in this mass is Sugam Singh, a 20-year-old model, photographer, blogger, and IT student. Although quite new to the scene, he is quickly making a name for himself through various fashion shoots and commercials. This week we bring a quick rundown of his style.
How would you describe your style?
I wouldn’t really put my style into one certain genre. It keeps changing with time. But I don’t really believe in following trends blindly. Yes, I do keep up with what’s hot and what’s not in the fashion scene right now but I won’t head out in a look just because everyone else thinks it’s cool. I also like simple, clean, and sharp looks. I stay away from obnoxious patterns, designs, and silhouettes. I prefer slim fit clothes over baggy or skinny clothes. The other thing I value a lot is comfort. I can never compromise on comfort.
What are the things you take into consideration while getting dressed?
The most important part of getting dressed for me is making sure what I’m going to wear looks crisp and is well ironed. I simply can’t step out oft the house if I know I’m wearing irrationally creased clothes. The other important aspects are the location and the event. You can’t walk into a party wearing Bermuda shorts and a flip-flop, can you? I also think about the people I’m going to meet during the course of the day. If I’m just meeting up with my friends then I dress pretty casual but if I’m heading to important appointments and meeting professionals for work then I try dressing more sharp.
And what do you try to avoid while getting ready?
There’s a long list of things that I try avoiding style-wise. Denim on denim in the same shade does not look good. It’s something most people don’t really pay attention to but wearing the same shade of denim on top and bottom does not flatter anyone. Just change up the color if you are planning on wearing denim on denim. There’s this group of youngsters I see in Kathmandu who dress up trying to look ‘swag’ and I find that really cringe worthy. There are other things too but they are actually minor issues. These two that I just talked about are the main things I stay away from.
Which is the most valued item in your closet?
It has to be this trench coat from Burberry that I got from my aunt. She bought it in Japan about two years ago and gifted it to me. It’s probably the most expensive thing in my closet. I really like its fit and the color too. It’s in a neutral tan color. I don’t wear it often because I fear ruining this treasured piece and just save it for extra special occasions.
Keeping it Casual
Who do you look up to style wise?
I love Daniel Fox’s style. He is a blogger and fitness model from Germany. I follow him through his Instagram account, @magic_fox. I think he has an amazing style and I really look up to him for style inspiration. I’m not kidding when I say that I want to own every single piece he is wearing in his Instagram pictures. Everything featured on his Instagram fits into my ideal style and he rocks them off in this very chic but laid back fashion.
Do have any rituals that you stick to while prepping yourself?
I scrub my face and shave it as soon as I finish showering. Before my hair gets a chance to dry out completely, I apply Brylcreem on it to maintain its volume. Then I use a hair sculpting wax to keep the curls in form throughout the day. I avoid brushing or combing my hair once it is dry as that causes my curly hair to frizz out. I scrub my skin every week. I use a scrub from Lotus. I workout at least five times a week to keep my body fit and healthy. I also apply a copious amount of Nivea sunscreen with SPF 15 I head out for the day to protect my skin from the sun. My Astaberry Lip Balm also sees a lot of use throughout the year. I apply it almost religiously because I hate chapped dry lips.
Casual à la mode
Singh calls this his college casual look as he is seen in something similar almost every day he has to go to college. This is a classic but stylish outfit. It’s very basic, incorporating only a few classic pieces. This outfit works well any day and during any occasion. Singh really likes this outfit mostly because of the jacket because he reveals that it’s in his favorite color. This outfit is also perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, according to Singh, because of the shoes.

Shoes: Timberland
Accessories
Singh is a big fan of shades from Anthropose because they are stylish, versatile, and help a good cause as well. These three are all biodegradable, UV protective, and polarized too. The watch on Singh’s wrist is one that never runs out of battery because it’s a self-winding watch. He also wears these two bracelets a lot as they compliment almost any outfit he has on. Though Singh things Skull merchandises are popping up everywhere at the moment, he likes the aesthetics they provide.
Sunglasses: Anthropose
Wrist Watch: Orion
Bracelets: Masala Beads
Skull Rings: Masala Beads
Sharp, floral, and fashionable
Singh puts this eccentric outfit together that looks chic and sophisticated but fun and zany at the same time. This is a great look for parties in summer because, even though this passes as formal wear, it’s not the orthodox, monotone and boring version of it. And the shoes subtly tone down the look with its classic touch. This outfit works even though Singh is wearing two different floral patterns in different color tones because, besides the shirt, every other piece of clothing he has worn here is in the same color tone.
Floral Blazer: NepaMode
Shoes: Monk Strap
Floral Shirt: Zara Men
Chinos: Inception
Light and breezy
Singh reveals that this is his default summer look. He confesses he is drawn towards looks very similar to this one throughout the summer months. It’s light, bright, and appropriate for summer. Although Singh’s style in general is pretty casual, this is his most casual look yet. It’s very comfortable and versatile too since you can make it your own with some minor alterations.
T-Shirt: Being Human
Shorts: Uniqlo
Shoes: Timberland
Summer scent
Singh uses this limited edition Eau de Toilette by Calvin Klein called CK One Summer 2016. It’s a refreshing version of the classic CK perfumes altered to fit as a cool summer scent. Singh does not like body mists so this is the only thing he uses to smell and feel good.
