KATHMANDU, April 21: The denizens of the Capital City have been plagued by traffic congestion.

No commuter in the Kathmandu Valley can reach his/her destination in time due to messy traffic jam.

There are around 1 million vehicles in the capital while the number of traffic police to manage them is put at 1,000.

Of the total 1,200 traffic police, 700 are busy dealing with the traffic jam on daily basis.

There are over 900, 000 registered vehicles plying the Valley roads, according to Bagmati Zonal Transport Management Office while the length of the road is just 472 km.

The problem of traffic jam has been compounded by the Ring Road widening move and pipe-lying work for Melanchi Drinking Water project.

SP Lokendra Malla has suggested building flyovers across roads, management of pavements and repairing potholes as a solution to the traffic jam in the Valley.

Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has also directed the schools and colleges to carry school children before office hours (before 9 am and 5 pm).
