Fifteen tipper-trucks from KMC collected garbage from some of the busiest streets of Kathmandu and disposed it at Tikathali. [break]
According to Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of Environment Management Department at KMC, they used an area of subsided land in Tikathali as a temporary dump as locals of Banchare Danda, who have been disrupting garbage disposal there since Friday, continued with their obstruction.
They are demanding compensation for land acquired by the government to build a supplementary dumping site near the existing Aletar landfill site.
Garbage piling up at Putalisadak, Thamel, Kalimati, Lainchaur, Bagbazaar and Jamal had been collected on Monday. Shrestha said they would collect more garbage on Tuesday. Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City also has been dumping garbage in Tikathali. However, the garbage trucks will most probably not negotiate the road to Tikathali if it rains.
Representatives of Banchare Danda locals, who are demanding the government´s written commitment to provide immediate compensation, were to meet officials of the Ministries of Finance (MoF) and Physical Planning and Works (MoPPW) on Monday. The meeting was expected to pave the way for the agitators to call off their four-day-old agitation.
However, the meeting reached no conclusion as senior ministry officials did not turn up. According to Shree Ram Dhungana, one of the agitating locals, only one joint secretary from the Ministry of Local Development attended the meeting.
"The government showed its apathy toward our demands," he said. "Hence, we decided not to call off our ongoing obstruction."
