CAN calls 20 players for closed camp against PNG

KATHMANDU, Oct 19: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Monday announced the names of 20 players who will join closed-camp training for the ICC World Cricket League Championship's two list A matches (50-Over) against Papua New Guinea slated for November 16 and 18 in the UAE.

The cricket governing body selected the 20 players for the closed-camp training based on their performance in the Super League cricket event that concluded in the capital on Monday, according to a press release issued by CAN Acting General Secretary Uttam Karmacharya. The closed camp will begin after the Dashain festival.According to CAN, the 20 players selected for the training are Paras Khadka, Gyanendra Malla, Sharad Vesawkar, Shakti Prasad Gauchan, Basant Regmi, Sompal Kami, Anil Kumar Mandal, Subash Khakurel, Rajesh Pulami Magar, Prithu Baskota, Sagar Pun, Karan KC, Dilip Nath, Mehboob Alam, Yagyaman Kumal, Irshad Ahmad, Mahesh Kumar Chhetri, Naresh Budhayer, Sandeep Lamichane and Bikram Sob.

Dilip, Yagyaman, Sandeep, Irshad and Bikram are new players in the squad.

According Karmacharya, the final 14 players and four reserve players will be announced later.

CAN organized Super League cricket event in the capital dividing 70 players in different five teams in the first round and then selected 42 players for the second round, in which the players were divided into three teams for three matches.

Sharad-led Nepal C beats Paras-led Nepal A

Meanwhile, Nepal C, led by Sharad Vesawkar, beat Nepal A, led by national team skipper Paras Khadka, by 41 runs in the last match of the Super League at the Tribhuvan University Ground, Kirtipur on Monday.

Nepal C, posting 246 runs target, restricted Nepal A for 205 in 45.1 overs despite Naresh Budhayer sscoring 65 runs off 60 balls and skipper Paras contributing 44 runs off 51 balls. Naresh smashed three sixes and seven boundaries, while Paras hit seven fours.

Nepal A lost its three wickets for 50 runs within 11.3 overs. However, Naresh shared a 77-run stand with Paras for the fourth wicket to anchor the innings. But Sanjam Regmi not only broke the partnership but claimed wickets of Naresh, in 23.6 over, and Paras, in 25.2 over, to keep Nepal C in a commanding position.

Later Santosh Bhatt contributed 25 runs off 51 balls but that was not enough for Nepal A.

Rahul Pratap Singh, Sanjam and Sagar Pun claimed three wickets each for Nepal C to restrict the opposition. Avinash Karn took the remaining one wicket.

Earlier, winning the toss and opting to bat first, Nepal C posted 245/8 in allotted 50 overs with 62 runs off 66 balls from Bhupendra Thapa.

Nepal C started its innings comfortably as opener Hari Shankar Shah (17 off 27) shared 39 runs with Anil Kumar Mandal (34 off 52). Later Anil added 32 runs with Sagar (34 off 43) for the second wicket. Sagar shared 35 runs with Dilip Nath (15 off 27) for the third wicket.

Then skipper Sharad (22 off 35) shared 64-run stand for the fifth wicket with Bhupendra, who added 35 runs with Manjeet Shrestha (11 off 23). Bhuban Karki remained not out on 19 off 15 balls for Nepal C.

Basant Regmi claimed two wickets, while Mehboob Alam, Karan KC, Irshad Ahmed, Ram Naresh Giri and Sushan Bhari picked up a wicket each for Nepal A.

Nepal B, led by Gyanendra Malla, had defeated both the teams.
