KATHMANDU, July 16: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Thursday terminated the contract of Nepali national cricket team physiotherapist Aijaz Ashai after he was accused of sexual harassment by a female massager in Northern Ireland.

According to a press statement issued by Uttam Karmacharya, the acting general secretary of CAN, doctor Ashai, who was traveling to Europe with the Nepali team for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, has been sacked with immediate effect on Thursday after the accusation was made against him.The CAN had appointed Ashai, an Indian national, as Nepali team physiotherapist for the qualifier being co-hosted by Ireland and Scotland.

According to various media reports, Ashai has been accused of sexually assaulting masseuse at La Mon Hotel and Country House in Northern Ireland on Tuesday, after which he spent a night in custody. Ashai, 42, also appeared at Arden Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Nepali team members have been staying in the same hotel for the qualifier.

A constable told the court that the masseuse alleged that Dr Ashai, of Thakur Village, East Mumbai, India, had asked for a full body massage, and despite having been instructed to wear underpants, he attended without them, according to Irish news portal Belfast Telegraph.

Doctor Ashai told her that he was suffering in the groin and buttock area, the constable continued, and grabbed her hands and forced them between his legs while in a state of arousal.

The court heard it was alleged that he later apologized to the masseuse in front of a hotel manager, noting that she was in distress, and offered a £10 tip, which she refused.

Doctor Ashai's lawyer said he admitted that he attended the massage, but denied that he grabbed the masseuse's hands, or that he was aroused during treatment.

CAN President Deepak Koirala and event liaison manager Christopher Elliot were present at the hearing. Koirala told the court the Nepali team was prepared to offer a surety and pay for hotel accommodation for Ashai until the case was dealt with.

Deputy District Judge Joe Rice gave Ashai bail for £2,500, on the condition that the Nepal team lodges a cash surety for £2,500, that he reside at the Strangford Arms, make no contact with witnesses, reports to the police three times a week and gives up his passport. The matter has been adjourned till August 12.
