Call for reforms in Valmeeki Campus

KATHMANDU, April 3: The Valmeeki Campus (previous Tindhara Pathshala) that was established during the Rana regime to impart education on 'karmakanda' (conduction of religious rituals) in the country is gradually losing its charm among students.

Weak management has been blamed for a decreasing number of students in the campus remaining under the Nepal Sanskrit University (NSU) which offers courses from the intermediate proficiency certificate to the Master's degree in 21 subjects including Buddhism, English, Mathematics,

Economics and Tantramantra, besides the Sanskrit language.

Another interesting fact is that the number of teaching and non-teaching staffs and the number of students is nearly equal as the problem of overstaffing plagues the campus. The trend of recruiting 'unnecessary' employees continues to take place. The number of students is 810.

This was shared at a press meet here Monday.

The number of students in all 19 campuses across the country affiliated to the Sanskrit University is 3,700 while the number of teachers is 1,200.

All Nepal National Independent Students (ANNISU-Revolutionary) Valmeeki Campus chapter president IP Acharya said, "The educational status of the entire University has deteriorated."

The campus still includes 'outdated course' (some 22 years old) in its curriculum which is really a matter of concern. Annual budget of Rs 570 million is needed to run the campus.

It collects Rs 150 million annually from the rent of shutters in the campus premises.

The campus management has been accused of paying no attention to the restoration of the campus building and other physical infrastructure including the hostel damaged by the 2015 April earthquake.

Nepal Students Union (NSU) Valmeeki Campus Unit president Achyut Lamsal claimed that new generation is not finding an attraction to the campus as former graduates are just limited to presiding over and conducting the religious events.

Our collective demands are timely revisions to the curriculum, withdrawal of fees increase, holding of convocation ceremony, announcement of Free Student Union (FSU) election date and implementation of an e-attendance system.

The campus management has been suggested that it should not make the college as a center for recruiting 'unnecessary' human resources on the basis of political influence and pressure.

He said that the various students unions have announced phase-wise programmes of protest against a mess in the campus and the padlocking at the campus administration office and NSU contact office was the part of such protest. RSS
