KATHMANDU, July 25: The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has initiated the process to delist Nepal's aviation sector from the aviation safety blacklist of the European Union.

The initiative by CAAN comes after the aviation sector of Nepal was lifted from the significant safety concern (SSC) list of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The SSC imposed by ICAO on the Nepali aviation sector in 2013 was lifted on July 20 this year.

A communication will be sent to the EU based on the progress report of CAAN, said CAAN Director General Sanjib Gautam.

"We will send a report in a day or two, but the decision will not be based on it only. The decision will be taken by the EU aviation safety committee meeting that will be held in coming November," he said.

Hence, Nepal will be out of the EU black list only after a decision is taken by the safety committee that represents all 26 member countries. The EU had blacklisted the aviation sector of Nepal soon after the SSC was instated by the ICAO.

As a result, Nepali airlines are barred from flying to European skies since December 5, 2013, when it was blacklisted by the EU. RSS
