BIRATNAGAR, Dec 2: Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subas Nembang on Wednesday asked the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) to withdraw its plan to announce autonomous regions.

The opposition party has said it would proclaim autonomous regions from December 11-18 as part of its third phase of protests against the government. [break]

Nembang, who arrived here to attend the Udhauli festival - a Kirant festival - said the Maoists are committing mistakes by making preparations to announce the autonomous regions which is the jurisdiction of the Constituent Assembly.

“It will be a mistake on the part of the Maoists to announce autonomous regions,” the CA Chairperson told journalists upon his arrival in Biratnagar. “They should not take up the issue that the CA is supposed to deal with.”

Under the Interim Constitution, the CA is supposed to delineate such regions. The issue is under consideration under the CA committee on State Restructuring.

“They have told me that the announcement is just for publicity,” he said, “I am hopeful that they will cancel the program.”

He further said the CA would take decisions on issues it is supposed to deal with. Saying that the work on drafting the new constitutions is underway, he urged all not dispel their doubts that the CA will not finish its works within the set deadline. Under the new constitution, the constitution drafting process must be completed by June 28, 2010.
