By-elections held peacefully

Initial reports from Nepal Police offices at the local units where by-elections were held on Sunday also suggest that the voter turnout for most of the local units was above 60 percent.

Most local units register over 62 pc voter turnout 


KATHMANDU, Dec 2: The Election Commission (EC) reported that nearly 62 percent of voters participated in the by-election conducted for 41 local-level positions on Sunday.


According to EC Spokesperson Nita Pokharel Aryal, approximately 62 percent of the 226,799 registered voters cast their ballots, based on the latest reports. The EC confirmed that voting proceeded peacefully in all polling centers from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Initial reports from Nepal Police offices at the local units where by-elections were held on Sunday also suggest that the voter turnout for most of the local units was above 60 percent.  


The election for 41 posts including a mayor, two deputy mayors, two rural municipality chairs, four rural municipality deputy chairs and 33 ward chairs of the local bodies saw high participation from voters. 


Spokesperson for the District Police Range, Kathmandu, Superintendent of Police (SP) Nawaraj Adhikari told Republica that the voter turnout for the by-election of Mayor of Kirtipur Municipality has been estimated as 68.91 percent. “A total of 31,112 voters were registered for the by-election, of which, we estimate 21,180 voted on Sunday,” he said.


Similarly, Chief of District Police Office (DPO), Morang, SP Rajan Limbu stated that 18,578 voters, out of the 26,044 registered for the by-election, voted on Sunday to determine the chairperson of Gramthan Rural Municipality. “As much as 71.33 percent of the registered voters in the local unit voted on Sunday,” he told Republica.


Spokesperson for Jajarkot DPO, Inspector Madhav BK informed Republica that the voter turnout for the post of mayor of Nalgad Municipality has been estimated to be 70 percent. “There were around 17,000 registered voters in Nalgad, out of which, around 12,000 voted on Sunday,” he said.


Chief of DPO, Dailekh, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Dahal informed Republica that voter turnout for the by-election for the post of chairperson of Mahabu Rural Municipality was recorded at 55.44 percent. “The local unit had a total of 12,607 voters registered, out of which 6989 voted on Sunday,” he said.


Similarly, DSP Krishna Kumar Chand at Jhapa DPO stated that 73.51 percent of the registered voters in the district cast their vote on Sunday.
