Bus, truck collision kills 20 in eastern India

PATNA, India, Sept 19: Police say a crowded bus has collided with a truck in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, killing 20 passengers and injuring 25 others.



Police Superintendent A.V. Minz says 13 people died instantly in the head-on collision early Monday, while seven others died in hospitals. [break]



Minz said the truck´s cargo added to the carnage, noting it was "loaded with iron girders which pierced the bus."



The accident occurred near Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand state.



Police figures show India has the world´s highest road death toll, with more than 110,000 people dying each year in accidents commonly caused by speeding, overcrowding and poor vehicle and road maintenance.
