KATHMANDU, JULY 19: A burst of a fountain with mud water was seen in Jorpati on Wednesday.

A spring of mud and water burst out while digging a  wellbore at a house in the area, according to Metropolitan Police Circle Office, Bouddha.

The police have called the officials of the Department of Mines and Geology to study this. Police said that there was no further damage except that the surrounding houses were filled with mud when the sand and mud flew towards the sky.

Police officials said the Department of Mines has been asked to conduct further investigation on the issue.

Meanwhile a senior geologist Prithvi Lal Shrestha at Department of Mines and Geology said that the methane gas that had been mixed with the water had come out from the newly-dug well. “Although it does not affect health there is a possibility of explosion if there is a fire nearby,” he said.

Shrestha also said that it is not certain how long the gas will be released. “'This is methane mixed with water, there is no option but to wait for how long it will come out,” he said.

On Monday morning, the gas was released while digging a borehole for water at the house of local Sant Bahadur Lama. The gas released along with sand and mud has reached up to about 50 meters.
