British Gurkha dies in Afghanistan

KATHMANDU, July 13: A British Gurkha soldier serving in Afghanistan has died on duty Tuesday.



In a statement, the British Embassy in Nepal announced the death of the Gurkha and two other British soldiers serving with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles in Afghanistan, early on Tuesday morning.



The statement said that they were killed by a renegade member of the Afghan security forces. Next of kin have yet to be informed.



The statement also said that Afghan President Karzai has apologized on behalf of his government over the incident. It also quoted the British Army spokesman as saying that this sad loss strengthens the British Army´s resolve to work closely with the Afghan forces in order to stabilize Afghanistan and strengthen its government.
