VDC secys told to return to villages

DHANKUTA: The Dhankuta District Administration Office has directed the Village Development Committee (VDC) secretaries, who have returned to the district headquarters citing lack of security and threat, to return to their respective villages.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Kali Prasad Parajuli argued that VDC secretaries, who are supposed to stay in the villages, cannot continue to stay in the headquarters due to threats issued by some ethnic-based organizations. The CDO said the directive has been issued as the secretaries have continued to stay at the headquarters despite extra security arrangement for them and decision by political parties, local peace committee and local administration to reinstate the secretaries to their work stations. Similarly, the village peace committees have also expressed commitment to provide security to the secretaries.

Secretaries of all 35 VDCs in the district returned to the headquarters on November 18 after Samyukta Jatiya Mukti Morcha wrote to the secretaries to leave the villages or face consequences. The secretaries had fled to the headquarters thrice earlier due to similar threats from the organization but had ultimately returned to villages. But they have vowed not to return this time until the group issuing threat is identified and agreement reached with the group.
