KATHMANDU, March 26: Breaking the Bracket, a writing program, has invited young and emerging writers from Nepal to be a part of the year-long writing course. The program focuses on building a community of writers who are interested in creating feminist writing that will inspire the next generation of feminists.

According to a press release issued by Breaking the Bracket, the program is open to those who are writing in English or Nepali. Through reading and writing seminars, immersive artistic experiences, and residencies, the participants will be able to come together to read, discuss and work on their craft. In addition, the program will lead to the creation of a long-lasting circle of new voices in Nepali literature.

Between eight to 10 young and emerging writers will be part of this program. Throughout the program, they will work to create a substantial piece of writing (of at least 4,000 words). Towards the end of the program, their writing will be pushed for publication as part of an anthology.

Writers between the ages of 18 to 30 who have not published a full-length book of their own are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to women, trans* and intersex writers. Writers must be of Nepali origin and must have lived in Nepal during their adolescence. They must also be residing in Nepal for the year of 2018.

There is no application or participation fee to be a part of this program. While the program will cover the transportation, accommodation and basic meals during the writing residencies, participants will have to arrange for their own transportation and meals during the other components of the program. Participants living outside of Kathmandu Valley can apply for a travel grant to be a part of the program.

Breaking the Bracket is supported by a grant from Women’s Fund Asia. The last date to apply is Wednesday, March 28.
