KATHMANDU, June 8: Brain tumors are most commonly seen in people aged between 40 and 50 years in Nepal, according to a recent study by the National Brain Tumor Center. The report, released in conjunction with World Brain Tumor Day, reveals that the average age of patients diagnosed with brain tumors in Nepal is 46.32 years i.e. 40-50 years.
The data, which represents Nepal’s national statistics on brain tumors, was collected from more than 20 neurosurgical centers across the country. A total of 1,739 cases of brain tumor patients were analyzed for this report.
According to the data, between 5,200 to 5,600 new brain tumor cases are identified annually in Nepal. The occurrence of brain tumors is evenly distributed between males and females, with a 50/50 ratio. Among the patients, 58 percent experience headaches, while 36 percent report vomiting. Other common symptoms include seizures, fainting, paralysis, and dizziness.

Among the brain tumors found in Nepal, 39 percent are glioma. Of these glioma cases, 56 percent are high-grade glioma. Additionally, meningioma accounts for 21 percent, while pituitary tumors make up 8 percent.
Dr Rajib Jha, a neurosurgeon at Bir Hospital and the founding chairperson of the National Brain Tumor Center, stated that treatment often becomes difficult because many patients seek care late, making it challenging to achieve successful outcomes for all cases.
According to Dr Jha, most brain tumor patients in Nepal seek medical help only after the tumor grows larger than 3.5 centimeters. In many cases, patients arrive at an advanced stage—typically Grade 3 or 4—leading to complications during surgery.
He attributes this delay mainly to a lack of public awareness. Dr Jha emphasizes that symptoms such as persistent severe headaches in the morning, frequent nausea or vomiting, and issues with body balance can be early signs of a brain tumor. He advises that anyone experiencing these symptoms should immediately consult a neurologist for proper examination.
