Forwarding a 15-point demand to the hospital administration, the Junior Resident Doctors Welfare Society (JRDWS), a body comprising students pursuing Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery and Master of Dental Surgery, has announced phase-wise protests program.[break]
Among other things, JRDWS has demanded withdrawal of the institute´s recent decision to interview candidates applying for MD and MS under the Faculty Development Program (FDP). Earlier, candidates were selected on merit basis.
“The institute´s decision to interview candidates applying for MD or MS studies would encourage nepotism and favoritism,” said Dr Bikash Gauchan, chairman of the society. “The institute should immediately withdraw its decision,” he added. The institute has also been providing scholarship for some master level students under the FDP quota. This year, seven students were awarded scholarship under the FDP quota.
“There would be no transparency if the interview criterion is introduced to select students,” said Jagadish Bista, the secretary of the Society.
JRWS has also demanded a fair probe into the death of Niranjan Charuasiya, a student of MBBS third year in the institute´s boys´ hostel. Similarly, the agitating students have also demanded an increase in the number of scholarships under the FDP quota.
On Tuesday, the junior doctors would tie black arm band to protest the institute´s decision. They have also decided to halt all OPD services from Wednesday.
“We will not work except in emergency and in-patient wards. We will also not perform any surgery or provide OPD services from Wednesday,” said Dr Kumbha Raj Joshi, vice chair of the society. He also warned that they would launch more stringent protests if their demands are not met immediately.
