Boxing Association helps Shrestha

KATHMANDU, April 16: Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) provided a financial assistance to former boxer Krishna Man Shrestha who is suffering from motor neuron disease (MND) and has been referred to India by doctors in Kathmandu.



NBA President Rajiv Shrestha handed over Rs 50,000 to the former boxer amidst a program in the capital on Monday. [break]



Likewise, Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS) and Asian Games medalist boxer Deepak Maharjan handed over Rs 10,000 each to the ailing boxer, while Nepal Olympic Committee Member Laxman Shrestha and boxing players provided Rs 5,000 each. All boxing coaches announced that they would contribute a day´s salary to support Shrestha´s treatment.



"The support I have got will help me a lot. I´m feeling that my sports career is finally being recognized by the authorities," said Shrestha, who had won silver medal in the fifth South Asian Games and a bronze medal in the seventh.



"I was disappointed about the controversies that unfolded after the recent election of NBA, but this support has made me optimistic about the future of Nepali boxers," said Shrestha, who is also a boxing coach and national referee.



Nepal National and International Players Association (NNIPA) President Deepak Bista said that NNIPA would also support Shrestha from its Players´ Welfare Fund.



Meanwhile, NBA General Secretary Deepak Gurung vowed to establish a boxers´ welfare fund to support Nepali pugilists who suffer from similar conditions.
