KATHMANDU, April 11: Strolling down the bustling streets of Thamel, a passerby can hardly miss this small restaurant - BK’s. Located at an inconspicuous corner of Thamel opposite Funky Buddha, this eatery earns its reputation by serving, possibly the best fries in town. [break]

“I got an inspiration to start this new venture in Nepal while I got training in Belgium,” says Kuldeep a.k.a. KD, the proprietor of BK’s- the first frituur (in Dutch: a place to eat fries) in Nepal. He further adds that it was Bea Goeman, a Belgium resident who encouraged him to explore this possibility.

Inaugurated on 1st December 1998, BK’s has many connotations to its name and the acronym stands for three different things: Belgium Kitchen, Belgium Kathmandu and also Bea Goemans’s and the owner Kuldeep’s initial merged together to form BK’s.

The place specializes on fries which are perfectly made on a machine brought in from Belgium. Though a limited delicacies to choose from, you can equally indulge in lip smacking dishes like fried momos, spring rolls, samosas, pakodas, chicken drumsticks et al. The menu also includes enticing entrees like chicken satey, chicken wings, and shya fhaley (Tibetan dish). The customer magnet however remains the all time favorite “fries”.

At BK’s, the fries indisputably is the biggest attraction, however, the silent crowd puller has been the different variety of sauces that you can select from. There’s a smart combination of dips like Tartar, Special sauce, Pinda sauce, Patatje Oorlog and the devil sauce which is preferred the most among the crowd. Where else would you find such a variety of high quality dips? (Most restaurant serve flimsy red fluid which they call sauce).

Michael Boecker Larsen from Denmark who has been a regular customer of BK’s for the last five months says, “Whenever I want to have western food I opt for this place”. Many foreigners like him and innumerable Nepalis, young and old alike, come here to indulge in authentic food and unique service. After all, the main reason an eatery gets popular is by the quality of food they serve, and BK’s does it without any compromises.

BK’s does not have any over-the-top presentation. It is not swish or glamorous but is comfortable and delivers a service which the customers pay for with certitude. The place embraces simplicity and the concept of providing fine food with efficiency is indomitable.

Another regular customer Karma Sherap Gurung says, “I really appreciate the food here as it is better than the packaged foods and the fries compared to other places. On top of that it’s affordable and the food is excellent”. Gurung’s other friends can’t agree more.

Everyone needs a little indulgence once in a while so why not savor a moment with the delectable fries with any of the wide range of alluring sauces in a completely casual setting. So, if you think fries, BK’s is the place to be.

Dip it well.
