Earlier, skipper Krishna Shakya opened the scoring for Birgunj in the 33rd minute with a powerful strike from 22 yards in a pass of Niranjan Patel. Binod Lama hit back the equalizer in the 67th minute in a pass of Yogesh Gurung.
Birgunj played a man down for the last eight minutes after its defender Grishma Shakya was sent off for a second bookable offense.
Both the teams had lots of scoring chances during the match but failed to convert them. Birgunj glovesman Dipesh Yadav made some heroic saves to deny Munal Club.
Birgunj coach Ritu Shakya expressed satisfaction toward his side´s performance. "It is a matter of pride that we defeated Munal Club studded with many A division players," Shakya said. Birgunj is a second division club.
Shakya´s counterpart Keshav Mainali of Munal said his side was defeated despite playing better than the opponent. He attributed the defeat to problems in scoring and weak defense line-up.
A division outfit Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) will take on Lalbandi Football Club of Sarlahi on Friday.
Three brothers in Birgunj team
Birgunj Youth Academy featured three members of a family during its match against Munal Club on Thursday.
Among the three brothers, eldest Ritu Shakya is the coach of the team, youngest brother Krishna is the captain while their sibling Grishma is a defender.
