The process has been initiated after the Ministry of Youth and Sports directed the NSC to organize the district level school sports as President Shield from this year.
Birendra Shield was in the annual calendar of the then Ministry of Eduacation and Sports but the budget has been transferred to the Ministry of Youth and Sports after the formation of a separate sports ministry.
“We have already directed the NSC to conduct a national gathering of the district sports council presidents for the President Cup,” Minister of Youth and Sports Gopal Shakya told dainikee.com.
The popular Birendra Shield, that lost its extensive form after the royal massacre in 2058, was finally stopped from 2063 after the restoration of democracy as per the policy of stopping organization of sports events in the name of royal members.
Birendra Shield was initiated in 2031 in the name of the then king Birendra to shore up the Panchayat Regime and the government used to isuue directives to all the schools for compulsory participation. The tournament as such was effective in identifying fresh talents and barring a few from Nepal Army most of the national stars came through the tournament.
