The research unit will be housed on the premises of the Regional Food and Quality Control Office (RFQCO), Biratnagar. The government is chipping in Rs 40.71 million for the construction of the laboratory expected to come into operation within the next two years.
Chief of RFQCO Upendra Ray said the laboratory will help export Nepali food products in the international market fixing quality, commercialize agricultural products and develop agriculture sector as an industry.
He said this is the first time that such a research unit is going to be constructed in regional-level.
Due to lack of an international-level laboratory, implementation of food policy and programmes has faced hurdles and Nepali products have been facing charges of low quality.
According to the plan, the laboratory will be developed, among others, as a center of excellence in the field of food preservation, packaging, product specification development and training in the area of food analysis and quality assurance.
