The top leaders said they are hopeful of an agreement on the contentious issues in constitution writing very soon. [break]
"We are hopeful that the contentious issues in constitution writing would be resolved in a couple of days," said UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, emerging from the meeting held at the residence of CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal.
This is the first time top leaders of the major three parties have discussed the contentious issues since May 27 when the Constituent Assembly (CA) was dissolved.
Though the parties had informally reached an agreement on almost all the contentious issues, they had failed to find a consensus model of federalism. While the UCPN (Maoist) and other parties were in favor of single-identity based federal model, NC and CPN-UML were for federating the country into multiple-identity-based provinces. This difference had led to CA dissolution.
Meanwhile, Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel told media persons that they have resumed dialogues on all the contentious issues. Paudel is reported to have told the central working committee (CWC) meeting of his party that the top leaders have agreed to resolve the contentious issues in the next four days.
According to Nepali Congress CWC member Man Bahadur Biswokarma, Paudel had briefed the central committee members about the negotiations at the very outset of CWC meeting on Friday.
At the meeting, NC leaders had proposed taking the disputed issues to the people if the parties fail to reach an agreement.
CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel, emerging from the meeting, said the meeting of the top leaders focused on seeking a fresh agreement on the contentious issues. “We will resolve the issues at the earliest," said Pokharel.
