CHITWAN, June 1: UCPN (Maoist) Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday claimed that his party members were not involved in the abduction of Dr Bhakta Man Shrestha, the executive director of BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Chitwan.

Bhattarai who reached the hospital at Bharatpur along with other senior Maoist leaders -- Amik Sherchan, Giriraj Mani Pokharel and Barsha Man Pun -- asked the media persons to report news "based on ´findings not assumptions". [break]

"It is irrelevant to report news without proper findings," Bhattarai said. He, however, vowed to take stern action against the Maoist cadres if they were found guilty.

"Dr Shrestha´s safety is our prime concern," Bhattarai told reporters.

The Unified CPN (Maoist) had formed a three-member high-level committee led by standing committee member Amik Sherchan to probe the case of Dr Shrestha. The committee includes CA member Chitra Bahadur Shrestha and advocate Dharma Acharya as members.

Leaders meet Maoist commanders

The team of Maoist leaders also met Dr Shrestha´s family, hospital administration and commanders of the Maoist combatants at Shaktikhor.

The leaders had talked for five minutes with Dr Shrestha´s wife Sheelu in front of the media at 11 in the morning. They then held a secret meeting with the family for around 45 minutes while district-level Maoist leaders kept outside.

The leaders then talked with commanders of the PLA third division at Global Hotel in Bharatpur before flying back to Kathmandu at two in the afternoon. The Maoist probe team led by Sherchan, however, is still in the district conducting investigations.
