KATHMANDU, Dec 24: The prime suspect of the Bhaktapur father-son murder case Milan Acharya surrendered himself at the Maharajgunj Police Station, on Tuesday morning claiming that he had killed his father Kul Prasad Archrya and his brother Prabin in Balkot.

The team of officials from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office (KVCIO) is currently interrogating him further after he came into contact. According to police, he was depressed due to his repeated failure in his Public Service Commission (PSC) exam.

According to officials from the KVCIO, Milan has confessed to killing his father and brother by attacking them with a stone hand grinder and a stick. Confessing that he had killed his father and brother, Milan said that he also attempted suicide, however, the knot of the scarf he used to hang himself was undone in the attempt. “I reached Biruwa of Bhaktapur to attempt the suicide at a secluded spot but the knot of the scarf I used to hang myself was undone in the attempt,” his statement read.

“I took a room at the Sagarmatha Hotel in Chabahil and stayed for two nights. I saw the news in the newspaper this morning. I took the newspaper and went towards Koteshwor, but turned back halfway and got on a bus to Maharajganj. I showed the newspaper to the officer at the Maharajganj police station and said, “This is me,” Acharya said during his statement to the police.

He said that he had attempted to kill his father and mother before. “I had planned to kill both of them during Dashain, but failed. Following this, I found the perfect opportunity to kill one of them after my father came for treatment,” his statement further reads.

“I thought how the rest of the family will survive if I don’t survive. So I thought that my parents should die before me. So I killed my father and brother. After the murder, I hung myself on a tree with a scarf, but the scarf knot untied,” he said during statement.

On Monday morning, Acharya, 56, a non-gazetted first class officer and  his younger son, Prabin Acharya, 22, were found dead in the rented room of his sons in Balkot, Bhaktapur. Following the murder, the deceased Archarya’s elder son had been out of contact.

Archarya’s sons were permanent residents of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-1 of Khotang and had been temporarily residing in a rented room in Balkot, Fikadhara. Kul Prasad was the acting head of the District Post Office, Diktel Khotang and had come to Kathmandu on December 17.

On December 21, they slept after having dinner together.  However, others, who lived in the same house, reported that the lock to the room where the brothers stayed was not open the following morning. Hence, the police suspect that the murder might have been perpetrated on Saturday itself.

Police said that the father and the younger son were found dead in separate rooms. The dead bodies were found in locked rooms with injuries on them. Following that, the police initiated a search operation suspecting the elder son’s involvement in father and younger brother's murder.

The bodies of the father and son have been kept at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem investigation. Further investigation into this case is still ongoing.
