BBC axes shortwave service in Nepali

KATHMANDU, Jan 27: The BBC World Service has announced to stop the shortwave broadcasting of six radio services, including Nepali and Hindi, from March in a drive to slash costs, according to Reuters.



As the shortwave broadcasting stops, Nepali service will only be heard on FM radios and the Internet, said Rabindra Mishra, chief of the Nepali Service. [break]



BBC World Service is stopping the shortwave broadcast of Nepali service because the listeners of the shortwave broadcasting have been decling all over the world, added Mishra.



The BBC World Service that used to broadcast in 42 languages at one time now broadcasts in 26 languages only.



“Despite this fact, Nepali Service has been retained as its listeners have been gradually increasing,” Mishra added.
