Basic education on Mahayan-Bajrayan philosophy begins

KATHMANDU, Dec 8: The Mahayan Bouddha Society Jyatha has started providing basic education on Mahayan-Bajrayan philosophy to youths for the first time in Kathmandu.

There are 30 youths taking class provided by Gunakar Mahabihar. The followers of Buddhism believe that after Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodhgaya, India, he began preaching the Buddhist values in different parts.

The Bajracharya, Shakya and Tuladhar communities of Kathmandu Valley have been adopting Mahayan and Bajrayan. Buddha religion bears special significance in various countries including Nepal. Buddhist scholar Manjushree Ratna Bajracharya informed that Gautam Buddha had given sermon to selective youths on Mahayan and Bajrayan.

The Mahayan consists of Mantrayan and Parmitayan. It is believed that there are ten karmas in Bajrayan, and the Bajracharya people have been abiding by these 10 karmas. Another Buddhist scholar Phanindra Ratna Bajracharya said the people need to give up arrogance. He expressed worry over limiting Buddhist philosophy only in Bajracharya, Shakya and Tuladhar communities.

Nepal Bajrayan Federation Chairperson Rajendraman Bajracharya was of the view to ensure curricula for the study of Mahayan Buddhism from the primary to the Master's degree course to address the needs of interested. Chacha Guru Maniratna Bajracharya said Nepal's rare Chacha (Charyageet) is based on the Buddhism and the Bajrayan discipline in Buddhism had its special importance.

Moreover, Mahayan Buddhism woman scholar Sumati Bajracharya said new generations are losing their interest in Buddhism and the objective of the programme was to promote Buddhism. During the eight-week course, the participants will be given free classes and those coming out first, second and third will be rewarded.

Society Secretary Triratna Bajracharya however said the youths were enthused to attain education on Bajrayan philosophy and, so far, 30 have registered their names for the course.
