Bardiya Hospital without doctors

BARDIYA, May 9: Bardiya District Hospital is manned by a lone Assistant Health Worker (AHA) for the last two months. The government has not appointed any doctor though several positions have been lying vacant for months now.

According to Chief District Officer Achyut Lamichhane, absence of doctors in the hospital has hit the patients hard. The hospital administration had hired two doctors on contract but they left for further studies. [break]

“There are six permanent positions for doctors in the hospital,” said Lamichhane.

“The health ministry has assured us of appointing doctors soon. But we don´t know when that would happen,” he added.

Due to lack of doctors at the hospital, patients have been compelled to visit hospitals in the bordering towns of India for treatment. “Only the rich can afford treatment in India. Poor people like us will have to die due to lack of treatment,” said Setu Chaudhari, a local of Gola VDC.
