The poor in remote villages of Bara faced an acute shortage of food supply during the three-day banda. Worst hit were the families of daily laborers.
“We were forced to stay without food,” Basudev Majhi of Auraha said. He complained that the same party which he voted in last election was now responsible for forcing him and his family to live without food.
The same situation was faced by a dozen other Musahar families in Auraha-2. While some ate dry corns, the others cooked jungle shrubs to feed their children. They said that they did not even know why the banda was called.
Lahan
Even when the three-day banda was called off on Tuesday afternoon, government offices remained closed in Lahan.
Since the first day of the banda, all offices except the district administration and area units remained closed. The banks too remained closed causing much difficulty to the locals.
“The officers were basking in the sun, but they refused to do any transaction saying it was a banda,” Kosila Mahato said after failing to withdraw money at Nepal Bank office in Lahan.
Similarly, many people who reached land revenue and transport offices returned complaining no work was done even when the banda was called off on Tuesday afternoon. Chief District Officer Birendra Kumar Yadav said he was unaware that the offices were closed.
Nepalgunj
On the last day of the banda, the Maoists attacked the Investment Bank office situated at Dhambhoji, Surkhet road, in Nepalgunj. They smashed the window of the bank when the Maoists were attending a program at Dhambhoji chowk.
The Maoists, however, have claimed that they were not responsible for vandalizing the bank.
