BIRGUNJ, Sept 9: Labor unions affiliated with CPN-UML, Nepali Congress and UCPN (Maoist) on Wednesday called a general strike in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat over the sacking of three workers by National Medical College, Birgunj.

Life in the three districts came to a complete standstill due to the strike. Over 200 industries on Pathlaiya-Birgunj corridor remained shut throughout the day. Vehicles couldn´t ply since morning because of road obstructions at several places along the highway, while educational institutions were also affected by the banda.

Shops in Birgunj were closed since the morning. The banda callers burnt tyres at Ghantaghar, Maisthan and other places to protest the workers´ sacking.

President of All Nepal Trade Union, Bara, Beni Prasad Timalsina said they had launched the protest demanding reinstatement of the sacked workers. He said the banda was also called to protest the intervention by National Medical College´s management in the workers´ peaceful protest.
