CHITWAN, May 19: A few months ago, Jamuna Chepang of the remote village of Badarjhuli in Madi of Chitwan died while delivering a baby due to the lack of immediate medical attention. Fortunately, the baby was saved and was adopted by a Chaudhary family.

Jamuna´s is not the only death in the village caused due to lack of timely medical attention. Many pregnant women in the village have lost their lives as there are no health posts in the nearby areas to provide them timely medical treatment. [break]

Though the deaths of these women still haunt the village, villagers are somehow relieved after the District Health Office (DHO), Chitwan deployed a team of health workers to attend to pregnant women in the village.

Chief of DHO Kehar Singh Godar assured that no pregnant woman would die of lack of medical attention from now on. “Our health workers will be there in the village to attend to pregnant women. There will be no more deaths of pregnant mothers,” said Godar.

Recalling past incidents, Raju Tamang, a local, said, “Many pregnant women have died in the past. I hope this campaign will help save lives.”

“It is not only pregnant woman who die due to lack of medical attention, but also those suffering from minor diseases such as diarrhea,” he added. There are 500 households in Badarjhuli.

According to Godar, all the trained health workers deployed by DHO are also from the same village. “Besides providing them medical treatment, the health workers are also spreading awareness about health issues,” said Godar.

Currently, there are 250 immunization centers and 50 health centers in the district but there was no medical facility in Badarjhuli. “A community health center has been set up in the village for carrying out this medical campaign,” said Godar.
