According to BPKIHS, Shruti Karki (Dahal), 22, of Baniyani-4, Jhapa, gave birth to the baby boy Saturday morning. The newborn's heart is outside the body, but all the other organs are in a normal condition, doctors said. The infant weighs 2.4 kg.
A team of doctors and specialists including Ramesh Dahal, Anjali Rasaili and Joshan delivered the baby. The mother was admitted to BPKIHS four days ago aftter she went into labor. The baby was delivered through C-section.
"All the organs except the heart are normal. The weight is also normal," Dr Dahal said.
"As far as I know, this is the first such case in the country," he added.
On Sunday, the baby and its mother were referred to Man Mohan Cardiac Hospital in Kathmandu for further treatment and placement of the heart inside the body, according to BPKIHS.
Meanwhile, child specialist and chief of the paediatrics department Dr Gauri Shankar Shah said that one in 100,000 babies may have this rare condition, which is known as ectopic cardiac in medical terminology.
"In such casees, it is usually a portion of the body that is outside, but this baby has been born with the heart entirely outside," he added.
According to doctors, saving of such babies through surgery is rare, although it has been done.
