The council decided to recommend Yadav as the next chief election commissioner, informed House Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar. If Yadav gets appointed as the chief commissioner, three posts of commissioners will still remain vacant on the commission. However, the council, which is headed by the prime minister, is yet to deliberate on the probable candidates for the posts of commissioner.
Speaker Gharti Magar said the next meeting of the council will nominate candidates for the posts of commissioner. “The meeting could not nominate candidates in lack of necessary preparations. The next meeting of the council will take a decision on commissioners,” said she.
As per the constitutional provision, president appoints the commissioners to the election commission based on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council. But before that, Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee has to endorse the council’s recommendation.
Currently, Yadav and Ila Sharma are the only two commissioners in the office. Yadav, who has served as election commissioner for two terms, is believed to be close to UCPN (Maoist).
The post of chief election commissioner has remained vacant since the retirement of Neel Kantha Uprety from the post.
