KATHMANDU, Feb 12: The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) has called for a ban on unmonitored animal experimentation.

AWNN has requested government bodies, institutions and companies to immediately stop animal testing and rehabilitate the animals currently being used for such purposes.

A press release issued by AWNN this week states that B P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan conducts tests on sheep, rabbits and mice.

Another place which experiments on animals, according to the press release, is the National Biomedical Research Center in Lele, where monkeys are prepared for export to the US.

The press release cites animal testing as a “useless, cruel" practice that squanders precious resources, and proposes the use of software such as TOPCAT to replace the current practice.
