At a press conference held at Trubhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Maharajgunj on Saturday, CPN-UML leader Taj Mohammad said Alam was shot at because of his Muslim identity. “The attack has left the Muslim community deeply worried as one after another Muslim leader has been targeted in recent years,” said Mohammad, adding that they condemn such cowardly attacks. He further said that the government should form a high level committee to probe the incident. “The Muslim community would take to the streets if the perpetrators of the attack are not brought to justice,” added Mohammad. He also accused the government of failing to ensure security of the Muslim community.
Vice Chairman of Nepal Muslim Ittehad Organization Babu Jan Ali accused Bara police of failing to ensure security in the district. He also claimed that there is a nexus between police officials and Tarai-based armed outfits.
Alam´s son Jamsad said, “My father was attacked because of his Muslim identity.” He accused TUTH of ignoring their request to call senior Neurologist Dr Upendra Devkota. "The hospital administration is not issuing hourly health bulletin," added Jamsad.
Alam is a candidate of UML for the constituency number 4 of Bara district. Alam, who also chairs the Muslim Ittehad Organization, had contested in the previous CA polls from his the same constituency but had lost to Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) joint General Secretary Jitendra Sonal.
