SINGAPORE, July 7: The first Asian Youth Games 2009 drew to a close amid a ceremony at the Raffels City Convention Center in Singapore on Tuesday. The event was taken as a build-up to the Youth Olympic Games to be held in August 2010 in Singapore.[break]

The games saw participation by 1,200 athletes from 43 countries in 9 different games. China topped the medals tally with 25 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze while South Korea claimed second spot with 20 gold. Thailand completed the top three list with 11 gold. South Asian giant India were limited to 5 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze. Sri Lanka bagged 1 silver and 1 bronze.

Nepal´s performance in five of its games was a continuation of its poor record at the international level as it failed to earn even a single medal. However, Nepal´s women basketball team created history, that too in their first international outing, by defeating Kuwait.
