KATHMANDU, Oct 31: The government on Thursday promoted Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Upendra Kanta Aryal, chief of Eastern Regional Police Headquarters, to Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP), the second highest post in the Nepal Police.

A cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar decided to promote Aryal to the post that fell vacant after AIG Binod Singh retired a few weeks earlier. [break] According to Minister for Information and Communications Madhav Prasad Paudel, Aryal was promoted on the basis of seniority and work performance.

According to the existing 30-year service provision in the Police Regulations, seven top police officers including IGP Kuber Singh Rana are retiring mandatorily on November 15, or just a few days ahead of the Constituent Assembly election.

AIGs Nawa Raj Dhakal, Ramesh Bikram Shah, Pushkar Regmi, Dinkar Shumsher Rana and Ganga Prasad Pandey are retiring. They had all joined the Nepal Police on November 16, 1983.

Similarly, the government has formed a three-member panel to investigate on the Syanja police firing which took place on last Tuesday at Chapakot VDC.

The government has urged all anti-poll forces to call off all agitation programs in view of forthcoming CA election.
