KATHMANDU, August 9 : CPN-UML MP Binda Pandey has demanded that in the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) and provincial assembly elections, each party should provide a proportional number of candidates on the basis of gender.

In Tuesday's HoR meeting, MP Pandey said this while drawing the attention of the law minister to the urgent public importance of the need for equal participation of women in the upcoming provincial assembly and federal elections.

She said that in the next local elections, each party should field at least 50 percent women candidates for the posts of mayor and chairperson, deputy mayor and vice chairperson, ward chairpersons, district coordination committee chief and deputy chief. Similarly, she said that in the event that Dalit women members are not nominated, provision should be made to allow women from other marginalized and minority communities to run in election.

MP Pandey said that there should be a provision that a person can be nominated for a maximum of two consecutive times from the same constituency and the same electoral system in both the federal parliament and the provincial assemblies. Similarly, she emphasized that arrangements should be made such that the same person can be elected to the same position (mayor and deputy mayor, chairperson and vice-chairperson of rural municipalities and ward chairpersons and district coordination committee head and deputy head) only twice.

She demanded to amend the laws related to elections and bring those provisions before the elections to the HoR and the provincial assemblies in November.
