Addressing NA serving personnel at Army Headquarters on the occasion of Shivaratri and Army Day 2072, General Chhetri stressed the need of mobilization while remaining within the constitutional jurisdiction as the army's prime responsibility. "Though military operations are an aid to ease the political process and security threats are to be resolved politically, the national army cannot just be a mere spectator," said CoAS Chhetri.
It may be recalled that the national army came under criticism for deployment in different crisis-hit districts of the tarai region.
The army chief, who was addressing the closing function of the Division Commanders Conference 2072 held in Kathmandu, repeatedly expressed serious concern over the current political situation. He also spoke of the need of formulating security strategies and other policies, while keeping the nation and the people at the center.
Meanwhile, in a press statement, NA's Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) said that the army chief also instructed the divisional commanders and departmental heads to focus on the operational challenges resulting from the prevailing political unease and unrest, and remain prepared for the protection of people's lives.
During the conference, the divisional commanders assured the leadership of steadfastness in the protection of people's lives and national integrity and sovereignty, within their constitutional jurisdiction. They also expressed their readiness for the reconstruction and rebuilding of infrastructure damaged by the devastating earthquake last year.
The army brass expressed concern for NA's modernization, its future responsibilities and challenges. They also explained democratization of the army as its modernization.
