Apa to scale Everest for 20th time

KATHMANDU, April 1: Apa Sherpa, who has scaled Mount Everest for a record 19 times, has announced to scale the tallest peak in the world for the 20th time.



At a press meet organized by Nepal Tourism Board on Thursday, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Sharat Singh Bhandari handed over the flag of Nepal Tourism Year 2011 to Sherpa to spread the message of the tourism year from atop Everest.



Extending wishes to Sherpa’s expedition team, Bhandari said the government has formed a high-level task force to keep Everest clean.



On the occasion, Bhandari awarded Dawa Steven Sherpa with the International Olympic Committee Award for Sports and Environment for his contribution to the promotion of sports and environment.



Dawa is also a member of the Eco Everest Expedition 2010 in which Apa will begin the 20th climbing of Everest on May 20.



Apa said he is scaling Everest for the 20th time to spread the message of Nepal Tourism Year 2011, to collect garbage from Everest and to break his own record.
