KATHMANDU, Aug 12: Padmini Nakarmi, 31, has been working as Telecom Engineer at Nepal Telecom (NTC) for the past three years. A graduate in Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Engineering (IOE) at Pulchowk in Lalitpur, she also has an extensive teaching background.

Nakarmi started her career in 2004 as a Teaching Assistant at the Thapathali Engineering Campus where she worked for five years. At the same time, she also worked as a part-time Lecturer at Advanced Engineering College at Kupondole, and Kathmandu Institute of Technology at Gongabu.[break]

She then went on to work as a Junior Professor at Nepal College of Information Technology (NCIT) at Balkumari, Lalitpur, where she was later promoted to the post of Assistant Professor. She also served as the Program Officer at the Department of Electronics Engineering, NCIT. During the same period, this diligent young woman also worked as a part-time Lecturer at Everest Engineering College, Sanepa.

She is currently pursuing her postgraduate degree in Power System Engineering from IOE while juggling a fulltime job at NTC.

In the long run, Nakarmi sees herself in a managerial position.

What got you interested in the field of engineering and teaching?

My dad, Prem Kumar Nakarmi, is a former Head of Department and Chief Instructor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Thapathali Engineering Campus. He’s been serving there for the last four decades. He’s very motivating and inspiring, and it’s him who made me interested in technical subjects. That’s why I chose to study engineering.

What are the challenges that you’ve faced working as a Telecom Engineer?

I need to constantly update myself along with the system upgrades. Since I work in the International Roaming Department, I have to frequently communicate with international clients who may not always speak proper English. Understanding them can be pretty challenging, and I’ve often relied on my intuition to solve the matter. Likewise, since the international roaming facility is quite costly, the customers who could be VIPs always expect better services and seek support 24/7. I have to tactfully handle customers’ requirements while abiding by the company’s rules and regulations. A better international roaming service is an organizational as well as a national prestige. So that keeps me always on my toes.

So what is it that you love about your current profession?

My current line of work is the field of my interest. This is something I’ve always wanted to do. My job involves constant learning, and there’s never a dull moment. It goes without saying that working in an organization like NTC as a permanent employee makes me feel secure about my future.

Tell us about your work ethics.

I value honesty, and I believe in being sincere to the company I’m working for. I don’t ever compromise with my work and always give my 100 per cent.
