KATHMANDU, May 3: A meeting of 17 parties has decided to ask President Dr Ram Baran Yadav to protect the constitution, a participant at the meeting held at Nepali Congress´ parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar said. The meeting was called by NC to discuss the move in the wake of Maoists´ unilateral decision to sack army chief Rookmangud Katawal. [break]

The parties issued a joint statement asking the government to reverse the decision on army chief and urged the president to protect the constitution.

The parties have justified their decision -- asking the President to get involved -- pointing out that the Maoists have violated the Comprehensive Peace Accord of November 2006.

“Maoist party is one of the two parties of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The interim constitution has said that major political decisions should be taken with the consent of both the parties of the CPA as well as consensus of political parties. Despite these past agreements, the government took the decision without taking the consent of even the ruling coalition parties,” NC leader Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat read out the decision of the 17 parties. “Thus the Maoist party has bluntly violated the CPA and the interim constitution.”
