KATHMANDU, July 29: Former Minister for Education Sumana Shrestha has said political parties, citizens, and people’s representatives must come together to prevent the spread of religious intolerance following the incident in Dewanganj of Sunsari.
In a video message shared on social media, Shrestha said everyone has a shared responsibility to protect social harmony. “You may belong to different political parties, but in the present situation, we all need to come together. Whether through party organizations, social media, or social capital, we must ensure that this does not lead to religious intolerance,” she said.

Shrestha said attempts were being made to portray the incident as a religious conflict in order to create divisions in society, and urged all sides to work together to prevent such efforts.
Calling on the government to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future, she said maintaining social and religious harmony was the responsibility of both the state and citizens.
Appealing to civil society leaders, religious leaders, and people’s representatives at the local, provincial, and federal levels to play an active role in preserving harmony, Shrestha said the situation should not be viewed through the lens of political gain or loss. Instead, she stressed the need to focus on protecting social unity.
