KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Kiran Bajracharya has retired from police service.

She retired on Monday night upon completing 30 years of service. A special ceremony was held on the same day at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office to bid her farewell.

Bajracharya became the first woman to be in contention for the position of Inspector General of Nepal Police. However, she could not become the first female Inspector General. After the government appointed AIG Basanta Kunwar as the Inspector General, she missed the chance to set the record.

Over the past 30 years in police service, she served as the first female police officer in many police offices, divisions, and provinces. Kiran was the first woman to lead two out of the three then-existing divisions within the Kathmandu Valley-Bhaktapur and Lalitpur.

On November 22, 2020, when the transfer of 33 Senior Superintendent of Police (SSPs) was implemented, Kiran was given the opportunity to command Lalitpur.

In March 2022, she set a record as the first female police officer to lead the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), considered a critical investigative unit of Nepal Police. However, her leadership at the bureau raised some questions. She was removed from her position, citing flaws in the investigation of the 61 kg gold smuggling case. The then home minister Rabi Lamichhane relieved her from the CIB role.

However, with a change in government, she was assigned to another significant police unit within a few months. She was appointed as the chief of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, from where she eventually retired.
